St Jean de Luz

We went to St jean de Luz today in far south west France on the way to Bilbao, Spain tomorrow.  The trip took about 2.5 hours from Bordeaux.  The kids were really excited to finally find a real beach and were very happy  to go for a swim in the Atlantic.  The water was clean and clear although cold at first!!
The town appears to have an average age of about 60+, many of whom think its perfectly ok to get about half naked on the beach.  it was a cultural experience for the kids to say the least.
We found it hard to find good affordable meal options, doing a couple of laps around the town. there were lots and lots of bars that didn't serve food at all and a few high end restaurants, others were harder to find.  in the end though we found a pizzeria with really good sangria conveniently located next door to a pirate lolly shop with huge wine barrels filled with heaps of lollies.
We stayed at the Arena Hotel - great brand new no frills almost self service hotel.  clean, neat, free wifi, excellent value for about 85 euros.
