Consider staying in a Gite they are self contained homes which are generally booked week - week. This allows you heaps of space and the ability to cook for yourself and is a brilliant option for families. You often also have the benefit of the owner living nearby to help you with information about the area. If you like visiting local markets and then cooking yourself - even making your own lunch of baguette, cheese and meat is easier if you have a kitchen and somewhere to eat. Theres also the 'mummy and daddy benefit' of more privacy than a hotel room or B&B.
If you've got the time to stay from week to week (Saturday - Saturday) you can get ridiculously cheap accommodation. The best sites are gites de france (the english version) and Homeaway.com which is the english version of Abritel a French site. You can rent a beautiful 2 bedroom fully self contained and furnished house for between 250-400 euros for THE WEEK. Its an option really worth looking at. We are staying in a couple for less than a week and just paying the weeks rent because its cheaper!!
A few things to be aware of though: check whether cleaning and/or heating costs are extra. Also email the owner if you can and find out how close amenities are - gites de france don't give you a lot of info about the areas around the house. Check out what equipment is available in the house too.
This option takes a bit more planing but in our experience its well worth it!

THE COUNTDOWN IS ON!!!
Well we are down to less than 9 weeks till we head off!! We are still finalising the accommodation. Its too hard to choose.
I have found three places in Provence all of which have their own advantages but I'm really having trouble deciding.
One has a pool, and its gorgeous but really its Autumn and weather could be rubbish and its the most expensive and furthest away from Avignon. Heres the link tell me what you think http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p680331a
The next one has heaps of space for the kids to run around, really well placed and the cheapest just don't know that I love it, tell me what you think http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p617190a
The last one is in the prettiest village I've ever seen again lots of space, not a bad price but not a pool what do you think? http://en.gites-de-france.com/vacation-rentals-vaucluse-l-isle-sur-la-sorgue-gite,gites84_b2012.1.G356.G.html#ferme
Would be grateful to get some comments.
