the christmas market at La Roche Guyon

We visited a gorgeous town on the other side of the River Seine from where we are staying, just south of Giverny.  The Chateaux at la Roche Guyon was occupied by the Germans in the WWII and was Rommel's headquarters.  It was therefore spared from damage and is very well preserved, including the beautiful potager garden across the road.  We attended the annual christmas market at the Chateaux.  It was a fabulous mix of food and crafts held inside the chateaux itself.

We drank "vin chaud" - mulled wine, and ate gauffres (waffles) with salted caramel made locally - amazingly devine!  we also had locally made ice creams and sweets.  We bought apple and pear juice and locally cured sausages and sugared preserved fruits and salts, sugars and spices - including tasmanian pepper berries!!  It was a fabulous market and it had all the traditional tastes and smells of a northern hemisphere christmas.
